Islands Challenge Fund provides challenge grants and match funds ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 to support housing and community facility projects on Maine’s year-round islands. ICF Guidelines are available to provide detail about the eligibility requirements, the funding process and priorities.

The Conservation Fund recently released a study highlighting 16 successful examples of conservation-based affordable housing, ranging across urban, suburban, and rural communities (five of these are on islands). The profiles document each development’s housing and conservation features, while providing background on design and financing, as well as information on the protection and stewardship of the housing and conservation land. The following document provides a summary of the findings.

The Maine Land Trust Network held its annual conference in May 2007. Speakers Jay Espy of Maine Coast Heritage Trust and Darby Bradley of the Vermont Land Trust both mentioned partnering with affordable housing groups as a way to broaden community support for land consevration and help meet community goals. The Grantmanship Center recently published an article about writing grant proposals for capacity building.
